José Efraín Hernández Acevedo, M.P.A., J.D., LL.M., Ph.D., Esq.

Lawyer with almost 20 years’ experience in legal practice in Puerto Rico. Experience centered on civil litigation and governmental/legislative consulting. Currently, Director of the Social Sciences Department at Inter American University of Puerto Rico (IAUPR) Metropolitan Campus. He is also a tenured Associate Professor at IAUPR and teaches at an undergraduate level in the Political Science Programme. and, at a graduate level in the Government and Public Policy Programme.

 

Dr. Hernandez Acevedo holds a Doctorate, Sobresaliente Cum Laude, (2019) and a Master’s in Law (2015) from the Complutense University of Madrid. In addition, he holds a Juris Doctor, Cum Laude, from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico (2004). Moreover, he holds a Master’s in Public Administration with a specialization in Personnel Administration (2011) and a Bachelor’s in Economy (2001) from the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras.

He is the author of the book: “Bail in Puerto Rico: obstacle in the fight against crime?” “Interview with the Governors from 1972 - 2019” and author of the chapter on the executive branch in the book: “Puerto Rico and its Government”.

​

Dr. Hernandez Acevedo contributes regularly as a columnist in El Nuevo Día, Puerto Rico’s leading newspaper and is a recognized radio and television commentator who contributes to the improvement and development of Puerto Rican society.

​

He is a member of Colegio de Abogados de Puerto Rico (Bar Association of Puerto Rico), Puerto Rico’s Atheneum and the American Association of University Administrators. 

​

As Director of the UIAPR University Debate Team, Dr. Hernandez Acevedo has travelled extensively in Latin America and is fluent in Spanish with a superior command of the English language.
